Depth of Focus (Natural Hearts, Book 1) by J.D. Chambers
Growing up, Travis hated his small town, Slat Creek, and everyone in it. His only goal was to escape for good, and at the age of twenty-one, he thought he had finally achieved it. But when his sister struggles with the death of their mother, he has to return home to care for her.
Whitman grew up believing in the healing power of books, but it wasn’t until he moved to a small town in Oregon as their new librarian that he sees that belief in action. He’s living his dream professionally. But personally, he’s lonely and wondering if he made a big mistake, until he meets a sad teenager and takes her under his wing.
Might an observant and helpful librarian be enough to tempt Travis to stay?

A heartwarming story about loss, change and finding your place 💜
I loved this story. It is dynamic, interested and endearing, great writing by J.D. Chambers.
The story follows Travis as he comes to terms with being sole guardian to his 17 year old sister after their mum dies tragically. He is forced to return to the small town he hates and the land he is a part of. He strives to do his best for his sister and faces many challenges along the way. It was endearing to watch Caitlyn eventually come out of her shell, under Travis’s care and with the help of Whitman, the new librarian. Caitlyn is able to find purpose in her life and the support and distraction she needs to come to grips with losing her mum and best friend. Whitman is a wonderful character with confidence and flare, he becomes a pillar of strength for Travis and Caitlyn. The sparks fly when Travis and Whitman are together and they eventually find their place together. I love J.D’s descriptions of Whitman and to me he seemed sort of like a paradox and once it was written I couldn’t get the image of Whitman as a balding leprechaun out of my head, which in tern made the book a bit funnier.
J.D. infuses this book with love, family, care and humour and shows respect to a small town and its people. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and hope there’s more about Caitlyn’s half brother Jeremy.
Anyway, thanks for reading 📚!
