EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT – When a Man Loves an Alien
Lu-Ren scrutinizes me carefully. “I’d like to test something out. I have a theory.”
Talk about vague and mysterious! I blink at them, not sure if I like the sound of that. “Test out what exactly?”
A slow, slightly evil-looking grins spreads over their face. “I’m going to attack you and you are going to try and defend yourself.”
“Say what now?” My voice goes up several octaves, but I don’t care.
Lu-Ren pulls a small object from the side of their belt and with the flick of a button, it extends into a scary-looking long staff that they whirl around in the air with a level of precision and speed that immediately has me trying not to shit my pants.
“Maybe we should rethink your strategy. I always say talking and getting to know one another is the best way to start a relationship.”
“Everyone else clear the floor,” Lu-Ren orders, their voice strident and full of command. I’m not surprised when Zamir gives them a nod full of respect and saunters off, abandoning me to my fate. The others soon follow until only my boo and I remain with Lu-Ren.
Kai squeezes my shoulder. “It’s going to be okay, River. Use the skills you’ve learned from your training. Lu-Ren probably just wants to test where you’re at so far.”
Easy for you to say!
I gulp. “Okay.”
Kai vacates the floor and then it’s just me and my new bodyguard. Lu-Ren’s facial expression has gone from friendly to intent and deadly. “I am going to attack you with the aim of hurting you. Don’t hesitate for an instant. You need to act as if I’m a potential assassin.”
I start to sweat. “Uh, I don’t really like where this is going. I’m experiencing scared shitless vibes, if you feel me.”
“The only way to test out my theory is to attack you as if I mean to harm you. It’s good practice for you, anyway. I’m not going to go easy on you like your teammates.”
I gawk at them like they’ve lost their ever-loving mind. “You do realize that sounds totally bonkers, right?”
Lu-Ren rotates and twirls the staff in their hands in a maneuver that has me backing up. I’m no fool!
“Now is not the time for avoidance and cowardice. Defend yourself as if your life depends on it!”
Before I can even respond, they charge directly at me, staff raised to bash my head in.
Okay, I take it back. Lu-Ren is not hot. They are terrifying!
I shriek like a clueless teenager in a slasher film and do what I do best—run away.
However, the training room is only so big, and before long I realize that I’m running in circles on the mat, somehow managing to duck each time the scary staff comes flying at my head and narrowly escaping its promised pain when it inevitably crushes my skull.
“Help me!” I screech at my teammates who stand on the sidelines, not bothering to assist me one bit.
“You can do it, River!” Roxy shouts, her enormous heart eyes focused entirely on my assailant.
“Remember your training,” Zamir says, then offers in a monotone, “You can do it.”
That didn’t sound remotely convincing.
“You’ve got this, River!” Mal offers. He busts out a packet of peanuts and starts munching on them while he watches like this is the greatest entertainment he’s had in years.
“Fuck…you!” I wheeze out.
“Don’t worry, River. Lu-Ren probably won’t hurt you too much,” Ellie says, giving me a thumbs-up.
“Not…helping,” I gasp as I manage to duck yet another strike and keep running as if my life depends on it, which I’m starting to think it does.
There’s nowhere to hide. This is the room where we practice our self-defense and martial arts training, after all, so it’s an open space with mats padding the center of the floor, but that’s about it.
“Focus, River,” Kai calls out, stern and commanding. He’s the only one who looks even slightly worried.
Aww! He lurves me!
I’m so focused on my sexy boo that I stumble and fall into a sloppy somersault on the mat, narrowly missing a jab from the staff that I didn’t even realize was coming my way. Lucky!
When I glanced up, Lu-Ren is coming at me again, amber eyes fiendishly focused on my demise, and a shiver of fear races down my spine and all the way to my freaking balls. I don’t know why I didn’t fully believe Lu-Ren at first, but I do now. They are seriously trying to hurt me!
I manage to scramble to my feet and out of the way of the staff yet again, then I feint left, veer right, and promptly fall flat on my face when my shoe catches on seemingly nothing. Once again, my tumble happens just in time to feel the whoosh of air over my head as the staff whips above me, missing my noggin by a fraction of an inch.
Holy cow, that was close!
