Southern Awakenings Series, Book 2
Three weeks of playing taxi shouldn’t have him tied up in knots…
Everett says he owes him for his help at Foxland, but Carver has long been comfortable in the shadow of his unknown past. He doesn’t need the former detective to search through his life for family. No sense in holding space for something he’ll never get.
With his auto shop scraping by, he’ s back to bartending to pay the bills— and while he doesn’t want to admit it, the perk of easy company is losing its shine. Too broke to refuse the work, he gets a tip about a sedan off the highway. But the man behind the wheel quickly becomes more than he bargained for.
Daniel Henning may look like some bumbling academic, but when he brushes off the dig dirt, the man is downright gorgeous. He’s in town for three weeks and absolutely running from his baggage. Just like another college-boy that Carver used to know.
Maybe he hasn’t learned a thing if he’s willing to make this mistake twice, but it’s not just Daniel’s talent with rope that keeps pulling Carver back in. Daniel looks at him like the best parts of what he lost. If they could each escape the weight of their pasts, might they have a future together?
Only more time would tell. But Carver’s never been the kind to ask.

Carver
Carver pounded his fist against the wall. It’d been easy to picture him and Daniel like this, but in the midst of the real thing, he realized how wrong he’d been. With the way he’d gone on about not dating much, Carver had assumed Daniel would play it shy. But he wasn’t looking for a guide. Daniel wanted to give the tour himself.
The prof’s knowing smile glinted in the low light of the foyer. “Now would be a good time to tell me what’s off the table.”
He fought off the harshness in his throat to answer, “Very little.”
The way Daniel reacted, it seemed he liked his answer. And once he got his mouth on him, one thing was immediately clear. The man wasn’t kidding when he said he didn’t know how to do casual. He launched into things like a lover, like he might use the information later on. Daniel dragged it out when he found something that pleased him—pulling out all the stops to swallow him down his throat.
He wouldn’t have ever known all this was beneath the professor’s surface. He had no idea why, but Daniel’s laser focus had set its sights on him. And while Carver wasn’t used to being on this side of the crosshairs, he had to admit that it was kind of nice.
It was also testing every bit of his patience.
About the third time Daniel backed off and left him on the edge, Carver knocked his head against the wall and huffed in frustration.
“You havin’ fun? Being the world’s biggest tease?”
“That’s rich, coming from you.” Daniel swirled his tongue, sending shockwaves of pleasure up his spine. “Can’t stand a taste of your own medicine?”
By this point, he’d been hard for who knew how long. Daniel’s hands were everywhere, brushing the creases of his hips, the outsides of his thighs. He should’ve expected the man to be a quick study, but it was getting more difficult to keep himself quiet. The sounds were creeping into his ragged breathing, desperate noises forming in the back of his throat. He had to be careful, needed to keep the volume down—
“Come on, Carv. Let me hear you.”
Is that what he’s waiting for?
Carver had hardly got the chance to touch him yet, but as he glanced down, Daniel looked as wrecked as he felt—damn-near desperate for him to comply. Daniel twisted his wrist and stroked his spit-slick cock, reaching between his legs to tease at sensitive skin and fuck—
He couldn’t help it. His stomach swooped low, a specific desire building that he hadn’t felt in years. Despite his best efforts, a rough sound caught in his throat.
“God, like that,” Daniel rasped. “Do that again for me.”
The prof licked him from base to tip, still taking his time about it. His hand flexed where it rested in short brown hair while Carver tried his best not to hurry things along. Daniel teased with his finger again—lighting him up with sensation, just on the edge of enough—and if the man kept making him make noises like that, there was no way Carver was getting out of tonight with his pride.
He wasn’t sure if he cared.
Jesus, Daniel…
