If money makes the world go round, then the real estate market in New York is the engine that keeps it spinning. As one of Manhattan’s elite realty agents, it’s my job to wine, dine and do whatever it takes to close the deal. Yes sir, I act the part and look the part. Designer suit… immaculate. Hair… precision. He shrugged. “Sometimes, some things are meant to be. Like this…”
Without warning he leaned forward and kissed me.
I felt a lifetime of pain and longing in that kiss, but it wasn’t a sense of longing for me.
I felt as though it was Bailey he longed for.
Nonetheless, I kissed him back.
Suddenly I felt like I’d been wrong when I said that he and I had nothing in common.
Suddenly I felt as though the man who had escaped an orphanage, grown up on the streets and lied to get his job, was perhaps the one and only person in the world I could connect with.
And that perhaps Bailey was meant to be with us too.
As these thoughts raced through my mind— my heart— Jax pulled out of the kiss and announced, “We need to go to Shady Elm. Tomorrow. All three of us.”
“We do?”
Jax nodded. “Bailey and I need to go back. And you need to see it for yourself.
“I do?”
He kissed me again and nodded. “It’s all part of the plan.”
“Plan? What plan?” I got the distinct feeling Jax wasn’t about to share his next surprise. “You’re not going to tell me, are you.”
Jax shook his head. “Enough of my secrets for one day. What about you?”
“What about me?”
He touched a finger to my chest. “What secrets are you keeping locked away in there?”
I stood defensively. “Nothing. I don’t have anything to hide.”
Jax grabbed my hand and pulled me back down into the chair.
“Chill out. You need to stop this.”
“Stop what?”
“This whole ‘I’m perfect’ act. Nobody’s perfect. If they are, there’s something wrong with them.”
“That’s an oxymoron.”
“My point exactly. There is no such thing as perfection.”
“Thanks for the TED talk, Buddha, but I’m fine. Seriously.” I stood again.
Again, he yanked me back into my chair. “Jax! I’m not a damn yo-yo!”
“No, you’re not. The function of a yo-yo is to always bounce back. If you don’t own your imperfections, a day will come when there’s no bouncing back for you. Mark my words.”
“Your riddles are boring, you know that, right?”
“They’re not riddles. They’re truths. There’s a big difference.”
“Okay, wise guy. Since you’re so smart, you tell me what my big secret is.”
“That would be cheating. You’re supposed to own it yourself.”
“Says the man who has no idea what I’m hiding, if anything.”
“Ashton, this isn’t my door to open. It’s yours.”
