Exclusive Excerpt:

I gaze out the bus window at the London street and wince as my neighbour’s shopping bag falls open and a pineapple digs into my upper thigh, the tough leaves gouging into my skin.

“Sorry, love,” she says for the tenth time.

“Don’t worry about it.” I smile at her. “I’ve never had an intimate encounter with a pineapple before. I just wish it had bought me a drink first.”

There’s a stunned silence, and then she starts to laugh. “You’re a funny one,” she says, nudging me.

I suppress a wince as my sore ribs protest, and predictably, I cough. “Sorry,” I choke out through the hand over my mouth.

“You, okay?” she asks, looking as if she’s considering either getting a plague doctor or making a run to save herself.

“Fine,” I wheeze. “Don’t worry. It’s not catching. I had scarlet fever which turned into a bad dose of pneumonia.”

“Oh, poor you. My uncle had that.”

“Oh dear, is he okay?” I ask politely.

“Not really. He’s six feet under in the cemetery,” she says with gruesome relish. She pauses. “But I’m sure you’ll be fine,” she says as an apparent afterthought.

“Thank you for your confidence.” I reach up and ring the bell for the next stop. “Well, I must be off.” I wink at her. “I’ve got an appointment to pick out my spot in the graveyard. I’m opting for something with a view of the pub.”
