Book one in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series

How far would you be willing to go to finish the job?

Declan Hunt is having a bad week. His kidnapping case is showing little progress, his office assistant has left him on short notice, and his latest investigation has left him literally battered and bruised. But things change when he hires twenty-four year old Charlie Watts to help out at the office. They form an unlikely partnership trying to solve two seemingly unrelated cases whose threads begin to weave together when the missing person case turns to murder.

The investigation takes them from the dark alleys, gay bars and bath houses of Calgary, to the richest parts of the city during the world-famous Calgary Stampede.

But will they be able to discover who the killer is before another life is lost? And will Declan be able to solve the mystery of his relationship with Charlie who is clearly attracted to him — especially since it is evident that the attraction is becoming mutual?

Ten Unusual Things about author Peter E. Fenton

  1. Prior to writing on romance and mystery novels, I had a 42 year career working in paleontology for the Royal Ontario Museum. I spent my days helping with collections management of fossils that are millions of years old.
  2. My debut novel came out when I was 66 years old after I retired. I have discovered it is never too late to start a new career.
  3. My partner and I have travelled every kilometre of the Trans-Canada highway from coast to coast. My novels are all set in Canada, and as a rule of thumb, I have to have visited all of the locations that I write about in my book, (yes, even the bath houses).
  4. I have spent time working in remote locations such as Akimiski Island in James Bay which allowed me to spend time in close proximity to polar bears in their natural environment.
  5. I write slowly, and each of my books takes close to a year to write from inception to the manuscript I submit to the publisher.
  6. I average 3 hours per day at my writing desk, but much of my writing happens in my head while on walks, or even after I have laid down to go to sleep. I always have my phone nearby to jot down notes.
  7. For every word you see on the page, it is likely that I have written double that amount. My process involves letting the characters take me where they want to go, which often creates a lot of extra material that is ultimately edited out of the final manuscript.
  8. I am also a published playwright with professional productions of my shows going up throughout North America.
  9. For my entire life my hands have been affected by familial tremor which means that typing with accuracy takes a bit more time.
  10. I am involved in a real life 22 year romance with my partner. The secret to our longevity is that each night as we go to bed, we thank each other for three things the other person has done … simply showing that we see each other and acknowledge the accomplishments of the day.  It can be something as small as saying, “Thank you for taking out the garbage today,” or something as large as “Thank you for reading through my latest draft and making editing suggestions.”
