By Vanora Lawless

Devastating Magic, Book 2
A stubborn empath. A passionate dreamwalker. A love worth fighting for.
For empathic illusionist Warren ‘Sully’ Sullivan dreamwalking Captain Elliot Stone is more than the only thing keeping him sane and safe. He’s the keeper of Sully’s heart, even if he can’t seem to admit it out loud.
When an ancient grimoire infused with catastrophic magic comes into play, they’ve got to do everything in their power to keep it from landing in enemy hands. Unfortunately, that means working closely with a man who once shattered Elliot’s heart. Someone he would have done anything for.
As insecurity and fear threaten the fledgling relationship between Elliot and Sully, will the darkness closing in around them bring them closer or tear them apart forever?

“Talk to me,” Sully said after he helped Elliot into clean pants and a heavy sweater. Both were too big for him, but Marine had done the best she could on short notice without alerting anyone.
“About what?” Elliot asked, sounding drained, but Sully needed to hear his voice.
“Anything,” Sully answered, stripping his own clothes off. Elliot watched him, not with the usual heat that would’ve been in his gaze any other time Sully was naked, but there was an intensity there that stole his breath all the same. “How are you feeling?”
Elliot tilted his head side to side, his messed up hair flopping forward. “Not great, but at least I can think. Sort of. I’m frozen, and I hate the cold almost as much as you.”
Sully quirked a smile as he scrubbed the towel over his own hair. “So how come you always let me warm my cold feet up on you?”
Elliot managed a half-smile. “I must really like you or something.”
“Knew it,” Sully said, grabbing the clothes he’d been left, and sliding into them. The sweater was snug, but it was a thousand times better than the wet stuff he’d dropped in a pile on the floor.
“Sit down and let me see how bad your feet look,” he told Elliot. Obediently, Elliot sat in a chair beside the bed, wrapping his arms tight around himself. Sully knelt between his legs, reminded of when Elliot had unlaced his boots and removed them for him, looking up at him all beautiful and loving.
He carefully picked up Elliot’s feet, examining the bottoms one by one for wounds. Nothing but some shallow scrapes. Lucky fucker. The back of his left ankle had a blister, though, that had to hurt. Putting damp socks on wet feet had been the best they could do. It could’ve been worse. Sully patted Elliot’s knee and pressed his forehead to his thigh, grateful it wasn’t.
“Wait here,” he said, rising to grab his haversack. The bag and a lot of the contents were damp, but his first aid kit was a metal tin, safe from the rain. Retrieving petroleum jelly, a bandage, gauze and iodine, he brought them over to Elliot and set about disinfecting the bottoms of his feet and dressing the blister. “Told you petroleum jelly had lots of uses.”
Elliot cracked a tired smile. Sully squeezed his calf gently, then carefully pulled on the dry socks. Exhaling as his own exhaustion hit along with the crash of adrenaline wearing off, Sully hugged Elliot’s waist and settled the side of his head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat and letting himself enjoy Elliot’s hand resting on the back of his head for a long moment. Any second now he’d get up and they’d go figure out their next steps to get back to their team. Any second.

A drafted empath. A dreamwalking poet. A world at war.
Chicago, 1917.
Idealistic, aspiring poet, Elliot Stone can make people feel euphoria or horror with a simple touch. But that’s only part of his magical abilities. He can also wake in the dreams of people he cares deeply for.
Stubborn, fiercely independent Warren “Sully” Sullivan is an illusionist with a secret of his own: he feels the emotions of others as visceral sensations. That, and a lifetime of fending for himself, has left him guarded.
On their last night of freedom before shipping off to training—military and magic—Elliot and Sully indulge in an explosive, emotional night together. Elliot assumes it’s a one night stand and nothing more, until he awakens in Sully’s nightmare. The urge to rescue Sully is impossible to resist. And when dream-Sully begs him to keep coming back, something Sully would never do while awake, Elliot can’t resist that either.
As real life draws them into battle, their shared dreams become a refuge that only Elliot recalls. So when Elliot has the opportunity to recruit Sully to the secret elite unit of magical soldiers he leads, he’s willing to risk everything for the man he’s fallen in love with in dreams. But being away from the front lines doesn’t mean Sully’s safe. Now they battle enemies with twisted magic where their secrets are a liability.
Can they bring their dreams—and love—to life? Or will the war cost them everything?
