Exclsuvie Excerpt:
A growl from Bumble drew his attention. The pug was relatively mild-mannered. George had rarely heard him bark, let alone attempt to sound menacing.
As menacing as a small, wrinkled, old dog could be with his snuffling and trundling.
While George filmed, Bumble came over to sit beside him, still huffing and grumbling in the direction of the hives. His courage finally failed him. He decided they’d spend enough time outside for the moment.
Bumble refused to follow him, another strange sign. George retraced his steps and picked him up. He walked quickly, resisting the urge to peer over his shoulder every few seconds.
Someone or something had been out there. Bumble didn’t growl at just anything. George hoped it was simply a stray dog or Hector stumbling around for whatever reason.
“Okay. What are we doing?” George locked the door.
It was boiling in the cottage. The weather had been exceptionally warm. George would usually open all the windows, allowing the lovely breeze to keep things cool.
But he didn’t quite feel okay with having the cottage open. What if Hector showed back up to shout at him? He’d had more than enough confrontation for one day.
More than enough.
George set his camera to the side and went to find his phone. Unfortunately, it was buried under the blankets that Bumble had been fluffing for a nap. He grumped at being dislodged even for the briefest second. “My apologies. How terribly rough your life must be.”
Sending a text to Margo to see if she was busy, George went into the kitchen and filled a cup from the kitchen tap. He watered all the various plants inside the cottage. There were bits of greenery all over the place.
Margo invited him over to spend the afternoon helping in her garden. She also reminded him of the impending visit from his dad, who planned to come for the Highland Games. His mum had intended to visit with friends elsewhere.
His dad didn’t do well on his own and wanted to visit with George along with his brother and niece. It wasn’t an unwelcome trip. But it would be the first since he’d begun dating Murphy.
How did he introduce an old friend as his boyfriend?
Boyfriend.
Is he my boyfriend?
It seemed like the wrong word for Murphy. Partner? Spouse? Lover? George could think of a hundred different labels, but none of them felt right. He’d stick with boyfriend to avoid confusing his dad.
They were definitely in a relationship, even if labels eluded him. George had always found it awkward to use them. Names were also something that had taken him an exceptionally long time to get used to using.
