Exclusive Excerpt:
I clench my hand into a fist before uncurling it and resting one finger on the gauzy fabric. I hold my breath. Nothing.
Razor-sharp panic slices my nerves, and I place my whole hand on the shirt. I send out feelers, but my mind slams into a barrier—the one I felt upstairs. It’s as if a metal band is tightening around my skull, compressing tighter and tighter.
Suddenly it’s dark, and I can’t draw a breath. I’m trapped in a small space with no way out—
“Blue,” Levi cries.
I release the blouse, falling back in my chair, gasping, sweat running down my face.
“Are you okay?” Levi is up and leaning over me.
“Is it… Is it a nosebleed?” I ask, my voice sounding drugged.
He hesitates. “No,” he says almost apologetically.
“Never thought I’d miss them,” I whisper.
“What did you see?” Mrs Adams is half-standing, her expression wild. “Tell me.”
“Nothing.” The word comes out sharper than I’d like. “Nothing,” I say again more gently.
“What?”
“I’m so sorry.” I stare at her, willing her to understand. “I’ve been ill, and I can’t sense anything at the moment. But if you’ll give me some time, I—”
Her chair screeches across the floor as she pushes away from the table and stands. She buttons her coat with sharp, furious movements.
“I’m so sorry,” I say again. “I can’t see anything.”
She stares at me, her expression becoming cold. “Then what use are you, Mr Billings?” she says simply.
