Timeless
By Declan Rhodes

In 2024, Dylan Mercer is the rising star of professional hockey, adored by fans and unmatched on the ice. Yet beneath the glitz of his burgeoning career lies a truth Dylan fears could derail everything: he’s gay in a world where he fears coming out could mean the end of his career. After a tough practice session, Dylan’s discovery of a pair of vintage skates in an old locker sends him spiraling back in time to 1980, just before the US Olympic hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice.”
Thrown into an era where the stakes for being himself are even higher, Dylan finds an unexpected ally and more in Nico Santoro, a fellow player with secrets of his own. In the shadow of history, Dylan and Nico forge a bond that defies time, facing down prejudice and fear with the strength found in each other.
As Dylan grapples with his return to the present, he faces an impossible choice: a past world that ultimately learns to love openly because of his and Nico’s courage, or the present where he’s one of the brightest future hockey stars.

Our exploration of New York City the following day was a whirlwind tour. We started with the basics: Times Square, full of neon and noise, the vast spread of Central Park, and then the conspicuous wealth of Fifth Avenue.
Nico had his eyes wide open in wonder the entire time. As I asked questions, and he made his own comments, I looked at familiar places through new eyes. I could barely wait for the next moment he broke into contagious laughter.
Late in the day, we stood in line for the Empire State Building’s observation deck. It was a long wait, but we didn’t mind. The time built our anticipation for something awesome.
As we finally stepped onto the deck near sunset, the city spread out before us in every direction. A few minutes later, as we leaned against the railing, I spotted the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center standing tall in the distance.
A painful lump immediately formed in my throat, and I fought back tears. I knew what the future held for the iconic buildings, and the horror and heartbreak for thousands of people.
I wanted to tell Nico, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. How could I explain it without sounding like I’d lost touch with my senses? How could I burden him with the knowledge of a future more than twenty years away that could change by then for better or worse based on what we and billions of other people did or didn’t do?
Nico sensed the shift in my mood. “What is it?”
I shook my head and forced myself to smile. I told a half-truth. “Just overwhelmed by the view, I guess.” I gestured vaguely at the city below us, hoping he’d buy it.
He wrapped an arm around me and followed my gaze. “It is incredible, isn’t it? Think about all those lives and all the stories happening in those buildings right now. It makes you feel tiny and part of something larger than us all at once.”
“Yeah, it does.” I leaned hard against Nico’s shoulder. We stayed there until lights flickered on and the sky turned dark. The Twin Towers caught the last of the sunlight and gleamed. For one brief moment, I let myself forget about what I knew and simply enjoyed the beauty of the view.
