Natural Twenty by Charlie Novak
Roll for Love, Book One
Plants are easier than people—that’s Leo’s rule of thumb. After all, nobody really wants a man who looks like he belongs in a biker gang but would rather spend his time buried in books and flowers. It’s just easier to be single. Until he meets the owner of the new book shop.
Jacob Morris knows two things: he’s really attracted to the man who runs the local flower shop, and he doesn’t date. Not when he’s still healing from a bad breakup, has a new business to run, game nights to organise, workshops to host, and a website to build.
When friendship blooms into something more, Leo and Jay must decide whether to roll the dice and take a chance on love or keep forging ahead on their quests alone. Will their roll yield a one or a perfect, natural twenty?
Natural Twenty is an 80,000-word contemporary MM romance featuring Dungeons & Dragons, secret flower language bouquets, a spoilt Staffy (or two), and a best friend who is basically a gothic prince. It is book one in the Roll for Love series and can be read as a standalone.
“A man appears through the door of the pub, dressed in a dark cloak. Hunter and Snorri, you’re busy playing cards, and you notice something out of the corner of your eye, but it’s not enough to distract you. Ustri, you’re still deep in conversation with the potential rebels, and Castien, you’re too busy sitting at the bar trying to fix your lute and—”
“Doing vocal warmups,” I said, attempting to do some very off-key scales while Edward fixed me with a piercing look. Mostly because I couldn’t sing for shit. Beside me, Leo chuckled softly.
“Doing your terrible vocal warmups,” Edward continued. He turned to Leo, a dangerous smile curling at his lips. That usually meant we were in trouble. “But, Kruk, you do notice the man, and you also notice that he’s heading towards the piano…”
“Oh no,” Leo said, sounding slightly exasperated already.
“Oh yes, and he’s pushed his hood back to reveal a rather gleeful looking old man.”
It was game night again, and we were halfway through our Dungeons and Dragons session for the evening. Edward had decided to switch things up and had us running the local tavern for the night, complete with a set of house-rules which I knew he was going to spend all evening trying to break. So far, we’d had a bar fight, some people plotting to start a rebellion, and someone attempting to distribute pamphlets. Although that hadn’t been helped by Daniel’s character, Ustri, sitting down and engaging them in a long conversation about their cause.
The last thing we needed was to accidentally start an uprising. Especially since my character, Castien, had also gotten into a very heated argument with someone when I’d attempted to start singing… which may or may not have been the cause of the bar fight. It had ended with Leo’s character, Kruk, leaping over the bar to my defence and throwing the instigator out. I had to admit it was a pretty charming gesture, and my walking disaster of an elven bard may have found it quite attractive.
Now it seemed like the one person who wasn’t allowed to play the bar piano had just turned up. I wondered if I could challenge him to some sort of sing off. True, I had a shocking voice and Edward’s was lovely, but since it would be the dice rolls that made the decision, it couldn’t hurt to try.
“Are you going to sing?” Leo asked, leaning down to whisper in my ear. “It might distract him.”
“I might. Would you like a tuneless rendition of the Spice Girls or Queen?”
“Does it come with dancing too?”
“It does now.” I threw my head back dramatically, striking a pose.
“Spice Girls then.” Leo chuckled. “You get his attention. I’ll do the rest. It’s time the world heard my true genius. Whether they want to or not.”
