“Oh dear,” he says, watching me as he selects another biscuit. I eye the tin, wondering if I can make a dash for it, but I give up, knowing the lid will close quicker than Dracula’s tomb. “I see it’s that time again.”

“What time?” I ask.

“The time when you think about Levi and give that smile. Ugh.” He shudders. “All sweet and sappy.”

“It is not,” I say crossly. “Take that back. I’ve never been sappy in my life.”

He grins at me. “You are now. Over Levi. I hate to tell you an unpleasant truth, but sometimes you look like a constipated llama when you’re thinking of that boy.”

“You look far too cheerful for someone who hates being honest.”

“I’m too much of a giver. It’s a problem, lad.” I groan, but he carries on indomitably. “You moving in this week?”

I take out the last of the stock from the box, inhaling the delicious scent of new books. “Yes. After work today. I’ve only got a couple of boxes of stuff left. Most of it ended up at his house ages ago.”

“I wondered whether you’d ever get round to it. The way you buggered about, I thought you’d still be living over the shop when you were eighty.”

I stare down at the books. “It’s got to be perfect.”

“No, it hasn’t.” I look up at him. His eyes are very bright in his bearded face. “It doesn’t ever have to be perfect. It just has to be right for the both of you, and that’s the version that’s important. And sometimes it won’t be. Sometimes you’ll argue, and sometimes you won’t be able to stand the sight of each other, but if it’s right at the foundations, then you’ll stay and not break apart.” His face softens. “You and Levi will be fine. You just need to trust him.”

“I do trust him,” I say, stung.

He shakes his head. “Your heart trusts him. You’ve just got to get your head to do the same.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that your instincts go against what your head tells you and that’s not good for you, Blue. You’re an instinctive lad. It’s how you’ve survived all these years. You can’t have a dichotomy. You have to be in unison. You’ll get there. The love is there for everyone to see.”

We look at each other and almost as if synchronised, we shudder.

“Ugh,” he says. “Too much personal stuff.”

I nod. “I know,” I say fervently.
