I was in the middle of my second-favorite exercise routine—having sex with Naël being the first—when Vee sneaked behind me and just about made my heart jump out of my mouth. “Child, one of these days you will kill me,” I exclaimed, panting like a dog on a hot day. “Don’t you see I am exercising?” Vee’s eyes narrowed and her eyebrows knitted together. “Exercising? You’re watching my brother swim.” Shit! I couldn’t tell a twelve-year-old that watching my merman flap his beautiful blue tail made certain muscles in my body flex and my heart gallop. “I’m exercising my eyes,” I said instead, a frog in my throat. “What are you doing here, little mermaid?” She dropped to the sand beside me, crossed her legs, and braced her elbows on her knees, her lips stretched into a pout. “You haven’t accepted any of my suggestions for your wedding.” Oh crap, she had finally caught on. “Why do you hate me so much?” “Oh, for all that’s holy, girl.” She was such a drama queen sometimes. “Why would I hate my boyfriend’s sister? And such a cute one at that. Look at all those curls.” Her almost-white hair was a mess as usual, but it somehow fitted her perfectly. The profusion of wild curls and kinks framed a pretty, however impish amber face. Her freckles covered her upper cheeks and the bridge of her tiny, upturned nose, and her pink lips crumpled into a frown. “I’m just not a big fan of unicorns.” That was not going to fly. “But unicorns are unique, like you and my brother,” she argued, her green eyes twinkling. Gah, the girl knew how to work it. “Why wouldn’t you want some in your wedding?” I sighed. Loudly. “Vee, I promise that I will try really hard to include unicorns into our wedding ceremony, okay?” There was no arguing with that mermaid. “But first I have to find a place to hold it in, don’t you think?”
