I bounce down the stairs and Dominic follows. It’s surreal having him in my little chunk of home, but when he sees Tux come running and scoops him up without a second thought my heart turns into a pile of goo as he snuggles with my little man.
“Hi there, fella. You must be Tux. Aren’t you handsome? You’ve got pretty eyes just like your daddy.”
The world just stopped spinning or I just started. Either way, when the words cross Dominic’s lips, reality has warped. Two compliments in one night, neither of them provoked. My heart is hammering behind my ribcage, and I fear it might throw itself across the room at any moment. Our eyes meet and neither of us looks away. He continues to scratch Tux under the chin. His voice is gruff. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make things awkward.”
Awkward? The only thing that’s going to make this awkward is if he didn’t mean it. I step closer and pet Tux while he still snuggles into Dominic, and I’ve never been more jealous of a pet. Wait, not true. When he hugged Maggie and told her he couldn’t wait to make her his girl, I was jealous then too. Man, I have more issues than I thought if I’m jealous of animals.
