On a Midnight Clear
By Lily Morton
It can safely be said that Lord Barnaby Greenwood is not having the best of Christmases.
He’s penniless, up to his eyeballs in debt, and about to lose his estate. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that when a local property developer offers a lot of money to buy King’s Wood from him, Barnaby is very tempted. But his father had always impressed on him that the green wood was sacred and must be protected at all costs, so he finds himself saying no.
He knows this will result in the loss of his home, but duty comes before everything. However, that fateful decision leads instead to a magical Christmas for Barnaby, complete with an old god who grants him a favour, and a beautiful statue that comes to life.
Cosmo is perfect for him. He’s funny and kind and completely enraptured with Barnaby, and for the first time in his life, Barnaby falls in love. But how can this lead to anything but heartache, when on the last stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, Cosmo will go back to being a statue and take Barnaby’s heart with him?
From bestselling author Lily Morton comes a truly magical romantic comedy.

We come out into the hall, and he looks around appreciatively. “Beautiful,” he breathes as his eyes follow the painting on the ceiling. “I remember well the artist who painted that. He was rather fond of wine and fell off his ladders one morning, but he was so drunk he came to no harm.” He laughs robustly.
“Were you positioned in here?”
“Yes, over there by the door. It was rather chilly during the winter months. We were very grateful once your ancestor created the sculpture room. The tapestries keep out the winter winds.”
“Who is we?” I say, panting to keep up with him.
He waves a careless hand. “The statues, of course.”
“They can all hear?” I say, suddenly remembering his earlier comment. I flush as I think of the statue of the dryad that lives in my bedroom.
He shoots me a glance and then gives me a saucy wink. “They can hear, and oh, they are a gossipy group, Lord Greenwood.”
“Oh god,” I say faintly, and he laughs, but it’s cut short as there’s a gasp of astonishment and a huge crash as Michael the butler sees my statue and promptly drops his tray.
“Fucking hell,” he breathes, staring at him. Michael looks at me and flushes. “Sorry, my lord.”
I wave my hand. “Doesn’t matter, Michael,” I say.
The butler and my statue gaze at each other. Michael seems frozen in place at the sight of a naked man while my statue is sublimely unconcerned.
“Michael,” he says joyously.
My butler looks between the two of us, his eyes bulging. “Do we know each other?” he finally asks. I have to congratulate him on the fact that he’s bravely ignoring the naked genitals on full display.
“Not know me?” the statue calls. “Why, it is you who keeps me clean.” He winks. “Although the feather duster is rather ticklish.”
“Okay,” I say loudly, deciding it’s probably better that I interrupt before he gives my butler a heart attack. “This is—” I hesitate, looking at the statue. “This is—?”
“Cosmo,” he says, finally taking pity on me.
“Ah yes, sorry, my mind was wandering. Michael, this is Cosmo.” Cosmo gives his wide slanting grin at my butler, who just stares between us, his mouth still open. “And apologies for all the nakedness, but Cosmo had an accident and lost his clothes.”
There’s a stunned silence while Cosmo looks around humming a jaunty little tune.
“He lost his clothes in an accident?” Michael breathes and then quickly adds, “My lord.”
“Yes.” I bite my lip, trying frantically to think of a reason for that happening. “It was a car accident,” I finally say. “Not a bad one, but I’m very much afraid that all his clothes fell off.”
Silence falls again, which Cosmo breaks. “All my clothes,” he repeats before giving a peal of laughter.
