Chapter 10: Kieran Aiello
“Did I walk onto the set of a rom-com and no one told me?” Rory looked around the room as if he was checking for cameras. “This can’t be real life.”
“The most important question is how do you feel?” My heart raced at the thought of him rejecting me, which was a fear I hadn’t faced in a very long time.
“Ecstatic and confused.” He floundered for a few seconds as he tried to find the words to express himself. “Part of me is over the moon to think about more nights ending in your embrace. Part of me wonders why the hell I’m not freaked-out at the prospect of having a boyfriend when I’ve always been straight. Whereas another part of me wonders if I’ve lost my damn mind to even consider it.”
“You don’t have to answer right now. The last thing I want to do is pressure you into making a decision you aren’t comfortable with.”
To my surprise, he lay back down on me as he hugged me. I wrapped my arms around him tighter. “When I’m right here, I could happily stay here forever.”
“You can. That’s what I’m offering you.”
He idly began tracing patterns on my shoulder. “But isn’t this too fast? We’ve barely known each other for three days, so are we seriously jumping into a long-term relationship?”
“Trust me, no one is more surprised than me since I’ve always avoided relationships in the past.”
“Why?”
It was a simple question that didn’t have a great answer. “Things were easier when I was only trying to have sexy fun. But you make me want more than that. I want to curl up on the couch and watch old Doctor Who episodes with you. I keep thinking about what it would be like to read my scripts while you sketch. And I’m weirdly excited for you to laugh at what a horrible cook I am.”
That drew an adorable giggle out of him. “Are you seriously using being a terrible cook as a selling point?”
“Yes, because I know it’ll be a relief to you that I’m not perfect at everything.”
He snorted in amusement. “Wow, you really do know me, don’t you? So, how bad of a cook are we talking here?”
“The kind who still hasn’t figured out that the fire alarm isn’t actually a kitchen timer.”
He cracked up hard at that. “Seriously?”
“I don’t have the attention span for anything that takes more than three minutes in the microwave.” It wasn’t much of a defense, but at least it made him laugh.
