Dallas shakes his head. “You’re kidding me? You have your boy in your playroom, and he’s being punished, and you answered your damn cell phone. What the hell were you thinking? And why didn’t you just carry him to the bed? Forty-five fucking minutes, you left him there.” He paces a few steps away, then gets right up to me again. “And you still haven’t apologized!”
I did. Didn’t I? I would never not own up and say sorry. What happened? I ordered him to kneel. And what did I do? I ran away to take a shower, for fuck’s sake. Everything comes back. Cody, beautiful on his knees, but with pain etched on his face. Our conversation, or rather me telling him he can stand. Cody, wobbling on his legs, barely able to stand. And I left him again. Dallas is right. God, I’m an asshole. I step to the side to get a glimpse of Cody, but Dallas blocks my way.
“Leave him. I’ll talk to him. If he wants to come back, you can try to make things better then. But if he doesn’t want to stay, then I’ll help him collect his belongings and take him home. Don’t call him tonight, Ronan. Cody may seem like he has a tough shell, but that’s not true. He’s been let down by too many people who were supposed to care for him, and right now, you’re just another one of them.”
His words pierce my heart because I know they’re the truth. I promised Cody I would never let him come to harm. That I would protect him from anyone who tried. Yet it was my own doing that caused me to break my word. I push my fingers through my hair and nod. “I’ll make it up to him, I promise.”
“It’s not me you need to make that promise to. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
