Lord Garrington’s Vessel
By S. Rodman
It’s 2022. Magic isn’t supposed to be real.
Arranged marriages aren’t supposed to exist.
How are gay arranged marriages for the purpose of magic a thing?
Fen has grown up all alone in boarding schools. Never meeting any of his family. At his graduation, his older brother turns up to take him home. Except Fen discovers he is the result of a shameful affair and not actually related to Lord Garrington at all. Yet, for appearance’s sake, everyone must continue to believe they are brothers.
To make matters worse, an indiscretion reveals that Fen is a vessel. Someone who grows magic but cannot wield it. Magic can only escape his body and not kill him by regularly submitting his body to a mage. Hence the crazy arranged marriage idea.
It’s a shame the only mage he wants is his arrogant and obnoxious fake brother.
Lord Xander Garrington, like all British nobility, is secretly a mage.
He was only supposed to pay the boy off, but Fen turned out to be outrageously pretty. Then he turns out to be a vessel. The opportunity is too great to miss.
He needs to pretend Fen is his brother and sell his stepmother’s bastard to the highest bidder. Securing the best possible match to advance the family’s fortunes.
If only Xander’s emotions would obey.
He is supposed to sell his fake brother, not fall for him.

He watched breathlessly as Xander took one, two, three, strides towards him and he swore for a moment Xander was going to throw him over the bed and take him. Fen wasn’t entirely against the idea.
But Xander stopped and glared at him instead.
Fen swallowed and tried to remember how to breathe. He did not know if he was relieved or disappointed.
“There is a gathering at seven o’clock.” Xander said calmly. “Wear something appropriate.”
Fen stared back at him for a moment. Scrambling to get his mind working again and pull it back from the very naughty images that were playing in his head.
“What if I don’t have anything appropriate?” he asked.
Xander frowned, “Judging by the amount of suitcases you brought with you, I’m sure you will be fine.”
Fen felt himself flush at the thinly veiled insult and was annoyed at how much Xander could rattle him. Yes, the asshole was stupidly attractive; it didn’t mean that anything he said should bother him. The pompous jerk’s opinions of him were not important.
It was a damn good thing he had brought a lot of clothes with him if they expected him to dress ‘appropriately’, which no doubt meant ‘alluring but respectable’.
How else could they parade him around as something to be bought? Like a whore in a brothel. This whole situation was ridiculous. It also reminded him of something.
Fen smiled sweetly, “Isn’t this the part where you send something for me to wear to my room and I open it and gasp with delight, and then when I make my grand entrance, you can’t stop staring?” he mocked, fluttering his eyelashes.
Xander’s brows scrunched together. “This isn’t a romance book,” he snapped.
Fen squealed in delight and clapped his hands together in glee. Xander gave him a thunderous look.
“You read romance books. You wouldn’t have got the reference otherwise,” Fen said triumphantly. This was absolutely delightful. Big bad Xander had a soft spot.
Xander shot him such a dark look that Fen staggered backwards a step, suddenly wondering if looks could actually kill. Whether with magic or purely by sheer force.
“You are ridiculous.” Xander growled menacingly before turning on his heels and storming away.
Fen watched him go and then giggled. It wasn’t one sided. He could fluster Xander. This was an amazing discovery, and he was absolutely going to use it. Winding Xander up might just be his new favorite thing.
