The barman’s face popped into my mind again. Damn, he was beautiful. I hadn’t been able to keep my eyes off him, but I needed to be careful. Will had noticed, as had Ed. Even though they were my friends, they didn’t know I was gay. I’d kept my sexuality a secret my whole life. It wasn’t something I’d planned to do. When I went to uni, I’d thought I’d be free to explore, but there had never seemed to be a right time. My dream to open a gym became a reality, and thanks to Instagram, it quickly turned into the place to be. One gym became two, then three and on and on it went. The fitness companies started contacting me as they wanted to sponsor me to promote their products, and my followers grew. Suddenly announcing I was gay hadn’t seemed like a good idea. I’d spent ten years of my life building this business. I couldn’t watch it all fall apart when my followers, sponsors, and gym members rejected me. How could they trust me? All my life, I’d told people the most important thing in life was to be true to yourself. They’d see me as a fake—a fraud.
So now I was twenty-eight, had made a brilliant business, and was more than financially stable, but the worst of it was I’d locked myself so deep in the closet I should be having tea and crumpets with Mr Tumnus. And I hated it. I wanted to feel a man’s body on mine, to trail my lips over an unmapped body, and to sense being filled. I didn’t think I’d be able to hold back much longer. The idea of popping my gay cherry with a Grindr hookup wasn’t the way I wanted to go, so I’d been pushing it further and further from my mind.
I was coping with it until I saw the bartender at BAR 28, and then I seemed to see him everywhere. Every pub or bar I visited, he seemed to show up. He intrigued me, excited me. He made me think of all the fantasies I’d ever had.
