Chapter 11: Alistair Hargreaves
The mismatch between the book and reality about Hatter’s home was nothing compared to the man himself. Instead of a short, wizened old man who had lost a battle with Father Time and was trapped in an endless tea party, he was another impossibly beautiful person who looked to be in his thirties.
Despite my newly gained inches, he was still taller than me, with a lean figure that was made even more impressive by the impeccably tailored outfit he wore. It reminded me of a royal purple-and-silver wizard robe, with kimono-style folds over his chest that were under the jacket and long sleeves that were split to show the complicated embroidery on his arms. The panel in front of his legs had similar silver detailing on the bottom and added to the illusion that he was over seven feet tall.
Hatter had wavy blue hair that framed his face in the front. His turquoise eyes studied me with interest. There was something timeless about his youthfulness, with high cheekbones and a sharp jawline that almost made him too pretty to look at directly. What the fuck was in the water in Wonderland to make everyone so gorgeous?
“Well, well, well,” he said in a baritone voice that sent shivers racing down my spine. He took a step closer to me, making my stomach do an entire gymnastics routine. His pleased smile was dazzling. “Our long-lost Alice has finally come home at last.”
I didn’t know what to say, but it didn’t seem to bother him as he embraced me tightly. A faint whiff of the same heady herbs that Vivalter had been smoking made me dizzy. It sent me reeling when my head was already spinning from how radically different the man standing before me was to my pop culture expectations of a frazzled hair weirdo.
When he pulled back, he clasped my shoulders and gave them a firm squeeze as he smiled down at me with a fondness I didn’t understand. “Welcome back to Wonderland. I almost didn’t believe Vivi when he told me you had returned. But it really is you.” He went over to hug Bianco as I tried to gather my bearings and process that he called Vivalter by a name as cute as “Vivi” when the man was sexy as fuck. “Well done, my friend. Congratulations on doing what no one else could.”
“Perhaps you should save the congratulations until I’ve freed his magic,” Bianco said with a laugh.
“Nonsense. This is an occasion worthy of a celebratory tea party. Come, join me.” He brought us over to a long table under a pergola that was covered in ivy and exotic flowers. “Pellagrio, please prepare a tea party worthy of our dear Alice’s return.”
The servant bowed low before he hurried off to take care of the request.
Hatter took a seat at the head of the table, then gestured for me to sit on the side next to him. He was so regal in his bearing that I almost felt like I should bow to him, but I refrained from acting on the impulse. Bianco sat beside me, which calmed my nerves. Although, a little warning about gauging my expectations would have been nice so I wasn’t blindsided by Hatter being so different from the pictures and movies I had seen.
“I must say, it is quite unexpected that you are a he and not a she,” he commented as he continued looking me over with his turquoise eyes that seemed to glow with an unnatural light. “What a delightful surprise.”
Before I could reply, someone approached us. It was another absurdly handsome man, who had luscious brown hair with a gentle wave in it that beckoned you to run your fingers through it. He wore a black tunic with an intricate brocade trimmed with red metallic threading and a high collar. It was paired with plain black britches, giving him the look of a lethal assassin from a badass action movie. I sat up a little straighter in my chair when his gaze met mine.
“Ah, excellent timing as always, March,” Hatter greeted him. “Meet our new Alice.”
It surprised me when March sat in the seat across from Bianco, leaving the one next to Hatter and opposite me empty. He gave me a look over that made me feel shy to have so much undivided attention from so many ridiculously attractive people. It was also giving me a complex about how many famous characters from a children’s book I would have been willing to let rail me.
