Chapter 3: Cheshire Cat

Prince Renner got out of the carriage, giving me my first proper glimpse of him. He was tall, lithe, and had beautiful seafoam-green hair with blue highlights that cascaded around him in gentle waves. His eyes were a similar enchanting shade of sea glass, giving him an ethereal beauty that was sure to make all the aristocrats at court swoon over him once he arrived at the palace.

I watched from my invisible vantage point as he instructed his guards to lead the horses to water. He followed behind them at a much more leisurely pace as he marveled at his surroundings like a royal who didn’t get out in the wild very often. In his iridescent teal tunic and white britches, he was the vision of a fairy-tale prince who would be a perfect consort to the king. Worse, he looked like someone my mate could easily learn to love.

That simply wouldn’t do. Rather than becoming maudlin, it was time to act. I used my invisibility to my advantage, rustling the leaves in the trees above him suspiciously. “You look lost, little princeling,” I said in an echoing voice that made it impossible to tell which direction it came from originally.

Rather than freezing with panic, his beautiful eyes lit up with delight. “Are you the infamous Cheshire cat?” Prince Renner asked, his tone laced with excitement as he looked around the area.

That generally wasn’t the reaction most people had to me. Clearly, the little princeling was too naïve to know better.

I lounged on a tree branch with one paw dangling down as I slowly revealed myself from my tail to the tips of my ears. “Indeed, it is I, the master of mischief and mayhem.”

To my surprise, he clasped his hands together as he gazed up at me with awe. “It’s really you! Oh, how marvelous! It truly must be my lucky day.”

I tilted my head as I regarded him. “Why do you not fear me as most do?”

“Because I think you’re the most amazing creature in all of Wonderland.” There was genuine admiration in his voice as he stared at me. “I agreed to come here because I was hoping I’d be fortunate enough to meet you.”

I swished my tail in annoyance that the encounter wasn’t going according to plan. “Are you saying you came to meet me and not King Rei?”

“I have to meet him, but I wanted to meet you,” Prince Renner said with an earnestness that made it very hard to stay cross with him. “Your exploits are legendary. I love how you give hell to all those stuffy aristocrats I can’t stand.” He crinkled his nose adorably.

“You’re a fan because I cause trouble for people like you?” I rested my chin on my paws. “Perhaps you are more mad than me.”
