Chapter 4: Tavish Hartigan
“You’re such an amazing cook,” I praised Leith before savoring another bite. “This is the best stir-fry I’ve ever had.”
“It’s nice to cook for somebody besides myself.” His pleased smile was swoon-worthy. “I’m glad you’re enjoying it.”
“Is there anything you’re bad at?”
My question made him laugh. “I never mastered the fine art of parallel parking or math.”
“Both are things I could live without.” I laughed before taking another bite of the delicious dinner. “Thanks again for letting me stay with you. I don’t know what I would have done without your generosity or if I had rear-ended someone who wasn’t as nice as you.”
“Things have a funny way of working out for the best in this town.” He gave me a reassuring smile that made my heart flutter like a nervous butterfly’s wings. “I’m a big believer in everything happens for a reason.”
“What reason do you think the universe had for making me crash into your life in the literal sense of the word?”
He stroked his chin as he reflected on my question. The scruff on it emphasized his masculinity, but somehow it didn’t intimidate me. “Maybe it was so I’d take care of you.” His lips turned up in a devilish smirk that made him even more attractive. “Of course, if your parents heard me say that, they might make that mean something very different.”
The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them. “I wouldn’t be opposed to that.”
His eyebrows arched up in surprise. “Oh?”
Part of me wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole. But some part of my heart dared me to be courageous. “I’ve only dated two guys my own age. They were more interested in quick orgasms than in making me feel good.” My face was on fire, but I had gone too far to stop now. “I’ve never had anyone ‘take care of me’ in the euphemistic sense.”
His voice seemed to drop an octave, sending shivers through me. “There’s something to be said about the experience age brings.” His interested eyes roamed over me, setting my soul ablaze. “As a gentleman, I should refuse.”
“I swear it sounds like a ‘but’ in there.” My hopes lifted at the prospect.
His lips quirked with amusement. “But you are incredibly tempting. You’re so cute and sweet that it makes me want to take very good care of you.”
My dick perked up at the sound of that. “What’s stopping you?”
“I brought you here to be safe, with no expectations of anything happening between us. I don’t want you to feel obligated to have sex with me because I’m letting you stay here.”
It was now or never. I got up and walked over to his side of the table and straddled his lap with far more confidence than I felt. “What if I said I wanted to be with you because you’re literally the nicest and most gorgeous man I’ve ever met?” I licked my lips as my heart hammered at the excitement of being so daring. “I know you’re way out of my league, but—”
He stopped my protest by carding his fingers through my hair with a gentleness that made me want to purr like a kitten. “Please don’t say that. You deserve whatever your heart desires.”
“Even if that’s you?”
