The Half Baked Plan

Fire took out my business, my apartment and almost my life a few weeks back, and now I’m living in my best friend’s house while I rebuild, and he travels the world. He found his perfect match and now It’s time I found mine.
After years on my own, I want a family, but I have zero hope in finding my match while I’m still completely crushing on the hottest builder in the world, and to make matters worse, he’s now my roommate.
I thought sharing a house with Carter would help me get over him. I’d see why he’s never had a boyfriend, or anyone worth bringing around town. I’d discover all of his faults up close and squash the perfect god-like image I’ve cemented in my mind all these years.
Problem is, no matter what annoying habits I jot down on my list, the more time I spend with him the more I’m convinced Carter is everything I will ever need. Now I just have to figure out a way to tell him.
Carter
With Michael traveling the world, it’s just Lucas and me in his house while we rebuild the café, bakery, and apartment. I’m happy for Michael. I really am, but seeing another friend get their happy beginning shines a light again on the fact that I might never get mine.
I’m sick of being everyone’s best friend, yet no one’s boyfriend. I want my happy beginning too. I want someone to pick me. To want me. To love me.
So I do what any single guy would do, I sign up for speed dating. Blind dates suck but I’m never going to find the one if I don’t start putting myself out there.
The problem is, the more time I spend living with Lucas the more I realize, I don’t want any of these random hookups. I want the sweetest guy I’ve ever met. The one who bakes me cookies to make me smile. So now I have to figure out a way to show him I can be an awesome boyfriend. I can be his happy beginning if he will just give me a chance out of the friend zone.

My phone chimes in my pocket, and I jump back. Did he hear that? Does he think I’m some creeper, lurking outside his room? I mean, I kind of am, but he can’t think that.
I grab my phone out and rush down the stairs.
MICHAEL: My new year started with waking up to the sound of waves and the smell of Bear making me a campfire coffee. Australia is amazing.
I scroll up, and he’s included a picture. It’s a shot of his feet dug into the sand in front of the bluest ocean I’ve seen. It almost looks fake, and he’s holding up a stainless-steel coffee cup like Bobby would have done in one of his posts on Unfiltered Earth.
LUCAS: You’re getting good with the new phone. Maybe you should start a feed of your own and build a following for our new bakery.
Michael dropped his phone the second day in Melbourne. Bobby convinced him that if he was going to get a new one, he might as well get the latest, so it has the best chance of still being relevant in ten years’ time.
MICHAEL: I still don’t understand how the app works, but Bear promised to teach me. Are we keeping the name, or did you want something new?
Wait. Does he want to change the name? I’ve never thought about changing it. The Perfect Blend is exactly what we are; the bakery and the cafe, plus now with the new combined floorplan, it’s even more fitting.
Maybe we should make it something new though. We are starting over.
My phone chimes again, and I look down.
MICHAEL: Joking. I found this amazing artist in Melbourne who made us this.
I swipe up to see the next picture. Michael’s hand is holding an old-style rubber stamp with a beautiful carved wooden handle.
I can see the logo that was burned into the counters of the old shop etched into the pink rubber of the stamp.
LUCAS: Awesome. I don’t think I’ll ever want to change the name. You had me freaking out, man. Don’t do that. Enough is happening here I kind of need you to not torment me, okay?
MICHAEL: What’s happening there?
LUCAS: Just me obsessing over you know who. Nothing new.
MICHAEL: Well tonight is a night for new beginnings. Take your shot. What have you got to lose?
LUCAS: Everything.
MICHAEL: Life won’t wait for us. It’s amazing here in the future, come on and join me.
Is he right? Do I need to take a chance? It is New Year’s Eve. Maybe I should tell Carter how I feel. I could do it right before midnight. What’s the worst that can happen? The ball drops, fireworks go off, and we awkwardly disappear into the crowd.
LUCAS: Maybe I will.
Fuck, am I really going to do this?
