Emissary
By A.L. Morrow
Star-Crossed Celestials, Prequel
The line between angel and demon is razor thin. No one knows this better than Kai.
As an Emissary of death, darkness follows Kai like a shadow, leaving him touch-starved and lonely. Tormented by the error in judgment that killed his only love, he accepts an assignment to redeem himself: hunting down the demons destroying the mortal realm. But fate takes a turn, and Kai finds himself drawn to one of his targets instead.
Demonic martial arts expert Byron Black has struggled to survive his entire life. He has fought for every breath he’s taken and each bite he’s eaten, yet in the instant when his demise finally seems inevitable, death incarnate steps forward and spares him. Kai is as beautiful as he is terrifying, and although Byron suspects the angel’s interest in him is more than it appears, he can’t stay away.
Together, the pair search for answers regarding who wants Byron dead—and why—but uncovering the truth might destroy them both in the process. Can Kai defeat his inner demons to save the one that has crawled into his bed?

Relief loosened the tension in Byron’s shoulders, and his tapping heel finally stilled altogether. It warmed a previously cold piece of Kai’s heart to see him relax, to be able to make him happy. He’d said no the last time Julian had asked him for something; he wouldn’t do the same to Byron.
“I have two more conditions,” Kai continued.
Byron’s brows puckered again as worry shot across his face. How was it the boy never ceased to endear himself to Kai?
“First,” Kai told him, “I insist that you eat a proper meal.”
“I can agree to that.” The demon nodded enthusiastically, and a smile sprang to his lips before his eyes narrowed with suspicion again, as if remembering there was another, possibly less agreeable, condition. “What else?”
Kai chuckled. “Second, you’ll tell me everything you know about yourself—where you were born, who taught you martial arts, your favorite color. Everything.”
“You think that’ll help with figuring out this mess with Nash?”
Kai stared down at their hands, still knotted together on the table. He ran his thumb over Byron’s beside his, then pushed past the lump forming in his throat before admitting the truth. “Yes, that’s part of it … But I have my own, very different, reasons for wanting to know you better, too.”
When Kai looked up again, there was both a blush on Byron’s cheeks and a burning fire in his eyes. As amber swirled with the browns in his irises, he somehow managed to look both innocent and shamelessly eager for another fucking.
“You should smile more, you know,” the boy said softly, his stare fixing on Kai’s lips. “It makes you seem less scary.”
Stubbornly, Kai forced himself to frown. Breaking contact, he unfastened the cuffs of his black, button-down shirt and rolled up the sleeves. His forearms bulged menacingly as he crossed them over his chest to show off his severity. “Maybe I like seeming scary.”
Byron scoffed, then motioned for the server to return to their table. “You would.”
And Kai let out a laugh once more.
